Innovation Management is Change Management in the first line that is need to be prepared and execute well in order to inspire employees and managers – and not only to convince them. Strong communication, networking and stakeholder management are the basic for a successful innovation management.It is important to use the impulses of e.g. an inspiration trip as a starting point of an innovation initiative. Even more important is to use these impulses for the core business specifically.
In our point of view the ability for innovation is a longterm and multistage process which creates a sustainable innovation culture and safeguarding the future of the company – from the inside. This process is made of the stages Understand, Navigate and Adapt as well as an continuous learning, implementing and adapting cycle.
The first stage of the ability for innovation is to get in touch with start-ups and high-tech companies and their functioning, culture and especially their motivation. Understanding leads to insights which elements of culture make up a successful start-up like customer centricity, “fail cheap, fail early“, agile methods and digital tools. The customer realizes the basics for an innovation culture and which impacts they have. Even more important than just knowledge sharing is to make up minds for this new and exciting world, to share and enable the lust for this way of working to colleagues. In the end the customer have understood the basic principles and function of start-up culture and agile, creative and customer focused methods.
- Navigate and Adapt
A significant challenge in this stage is to navigate in the thicket of several methods, approaches and culture elements and to find a way for the traditional company which approaches might be adapted. That is independent from the industry of the company and how far the industry is already disrupted, the team and their skills, previous strategy, the innovation aspiration and other influences. The company needs an experienced navigating guide, someone who knows groups and start-ups deeply. This is fundamentally important because unexperienced consultants are not able to assess restriction and political dimension of groups. During this stage the essential task is the interpretation of start up principles and cultural elements for the specific company. What does “fail early, fail cheap“ exactly mean for a pharmaceutical company? How is it possible to work customer focused in banking? How can I create a cooperative and creative inter-divisional collaboration in a insurance company? These critical questions needs a deep knowledge of the industry and sure instinct in order to create a system of goals, values and principles for traditional companies. - Learn, Implement and Improvement
The system of goals, values and principles defines the starting point for the innovation ability programm. The aim is to allay employee’s fears, to increase Intrapreneurship, to attract motivated employees and to link them informally.
